What Does FDE Mean?
In AI, tech and business, FDE means forward deployed engineer: an engineer from a software company who works inside a customer's business to make the product run in production. In cyber security it's full disk encryption. On a gun it's Flat Dark Earth.
I'm Hayat Amin, and FDE is the job I do. I spent twenty years as a technology chief financial officer and sold three companies from that seat, and now I build AI operations inside companies myself. People see the letters on LinkedIn or in a job post and ask me what they stand for, so this morning, 5 October 2026, I counted how the people hiring for it use them. I read 6,868 live job titles on the public feeds of 27 AI and software employers. 92 of them have FDE in the title.

FDE in AI and business: forward deployed engineer
A forward deployed engineer is employed by the software company and sits with the customer. The product exists. The customer's data, systems and approvals don't fit it yet. The FDE writes the code that closes that gap, in the customer's environment, and reports back what the product is missing.
Palantir says it pioneered the role, and its product team and forward deployed team have opposite briefs. The Pragmatic Engineer quotes Palantir's own framing: a product engineer's focus is "one capability, many customers", and a forward deployed engineer's is "one customer, many capabilities". Internally Palantir calls the forward deployed engineers Delta. The same article reports that until around 2016 Palantir had more of them than traditional software engineers.
If you want the full definition, I wrote it up in what is a forward deployed engineer. This piece is about the three letters.
Who puts FDE in a job title, counted on 5 October 2026
Of the 6,868 titles I read, 300 say forward deployed. 92 use the short form FDE. They aren't spread evenly. Databricks has 77 of them, OpenAI 11, Cohere 2, and Anthropic and MongoDB 1 each. The other 22 employers in my sample use the full words or nothing.
OpenAI writes it the way a newcomer would want, with the full term first and the letters in brackets. Its Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE), Financial Services in New York City carries a band of $185,000 to $300,000 plus equity. The Healthcare and Legal versions in New York show the same band.
Palantir is the odd one out. It had 81 forward deployed titles live this morning and not one used FDE. Its title is Forward Deployed Software Engineer, and its New York posting shortens it to FDSE and calls the role "the blueprint". The salary range there is $135,000 to $200,000 a year. So if you see FDSE, it's the same job, written the Palantir way. I counted Palantir's roles in more detail in what is a forward deployed engineer at Palantir.
FDE is becoming the name of a team, not one job
This is the finding I didn't expect. 26 of the 92 titles use FDE without the words forward deployed anywhere near it, and most of those aren't engineering jobs. 20 of the 26 are at Databricks: six Senior Deployment Strategists, Engagement Managers, Technical Program Managers, a Delivery Partner Manager and a recruiter, each with "FDE" after the comma. OpenAI has two Deployment Leads, in Tokyo and Singapore, written the same way.
At Databricks the letters now mean the department. Its Senior Deployment Strategist on the FDE team for Financial Services is described as "the 'product manager' for the customer's problem", while "our FDEs (Engineers)" handle the how. That strategist is paid $219,765 to $302,220. The Senior Forward Deployed Engineer for Financial Services in New York is paid $182,000 to $250,208. By my subtraction, the top of the strategist's band is $52,012 above the engineer's. Databricks also writes in the engineer posting that "FDEs are billable".
If you're trying to read an FDE job post, that's the useful test. Look at what comes before the comma. Engineer means you write the code. Strategist, engagement manager or program manager means you run the customer and the plan while the engineers build. I compared those two halves in what is a forward deployed product manager.
The other meanings of FDE
Google completes "what does fde mean" with guns, business, AI, firearms, computers, pistol, computer science, tech and cyber security. Three meanings cover nearly all of that.
- Full disk encryption, in IT and cyber security. The NIST glossary lists FDE as the abbreviation, citing NIST SP 800-203. Apple's FileVault is one you've probably used.
- Flat Dark Earth, on guns and kit. It's a tan finish. Springfield Armory announced a Flat Dark Earth (FDE) colour variant on 2 June 2015.
- Fixed drug eruption, in medicine. DermNet describes it as a skin reaction to a medicine that comes back in the same place each time the drug is taken again.
The colour is why searches collide. Type "fde vs" into Google and 6 of the 10 completions are colours: coyote brown, coyote, coyote tan, black, tan and OD green. The other 4 are fde vs swe, fde vs sde, fde vs ai engineer and fde vs solution engineer. If you're comparing the job to a software engineer, my firm wrote that one up at forward deployed engineer vs software engineer.
What FDE means if you run a company
For a chief executive, an FDE is someone who builds inside your business rather than advising from outside it. Big vendors send them to make their own product work for you. Databricks bills for that time. Others carry the cost and earn it back on a bigger contract, which I covered in what is forward deployed engineering model.
A company with 50 or 500 staff in New York or London doesn't get that from a vendor. What it can buy is the same method without the vendor attached: one engineer inside the business, building on the systems it already runs, then handing it all back. That's what I do through Beyond Elevation, my firm.
About Hayat Amin
I'm Hayat Amin, and I've spent twenty years in technology, most of it as a chief financial officer. I sold three companies from that seat, with American Express and TripAdvisor among the buyers, and carried three FT 100 fastest growing listings along the way.
I'm exceptional at the forward deployed side of this because I read a business the way a CFO does and then build in it the way an engineer does. I go inside a company, connect the systems that don't talk to each other, and put real time dashboards in front of the chief executive so the week runs on today's numbers rather than last month's. I also value the intellectual property and data a company already owns, and sit beside founders from the first conversation to the wire transfer on an exit.
I'm available now for fractional chief financial officer and AI operations work through Beyond Elevation, and you can book the engineering side at meethayat.com/services/fde.
If you want a second pair of eyes on what to automate first, I do a free audit call, one call and then a written list, at beyondelevation.com/call/hayat.
Questions people actually ask
What does FDE mean in AI?
Forward deployed engineer: an engineer from an AI or software company who works inside a customer's business to get the product running on its own data and systems. OpenAI, Databricks, Cohere, Anthropic and MongoDB all had FDE in live job titles on 5 October 2026.
What does FDE mean in business?
Nearly always forward deployed engineer, and at Databricks it now names a whole team. Its Deployment Strategists, Engagement Managers and Program Managers carry FDE in their titles too.
What does FDE mean in tech?
In a job post, forward deployed engineer. In IT security, full disk encryption, which the NIST glossary lists under FDE.
What does FDE mean in cyber security?
Full disk encryption, where the whole drive is encrypted. Apple says FileVault keeps someone from getting access to your data without your login password.
What does FDE mean on a gun?
Flat Dark Earth, a tan finish. Springfield Armory announced its Flat Dark Earth (FDE) variant on 2 June 2015.
What is FDSE?
Forward Deployed Software Engineer, Palantir's name for the job. None of its 81 forward deployed titles this morning used FDE. The New York band is $135,000 to $200,000.
Is FDE the same as SWE?
No. A software engineer builds one product for many customers. An FDE builds for one customer with that product. Palantir's line is "one capability, many customers" against "one customer, many capabilities".
Where these facts come from
Every number was read on 5 October 2026. The title counts are mine, from the public Greenhouse, Ashby and Lever job feeds of 27 employers: Anthropic, Databricks, Scale AI, Datadog, Figma, Cresta, Brex, Samsara, Vercel, MongoDB, Elastic, Glean, OpenAI, Cursor, Replit, Harvey, Sierra, Decagon, Ramp, Notion, Perplexity, Writer, Cohere, ElevenLabs, LangChain, Modal and Palantir. It's a sample, so 92 is a floor, not a census. Pay bands are from the linked postings. The Delta and 2016 facts are from The Pragmatic Engineer of 12 August 2025. The Google completions were read the same morning from Google's US autocomplete. The $52,012 gap is my own subtraction off Databricks' published bands.
