What Is a Forward Deployed Engineer at Palantir?
It is an engineer Palantir pays and then puts inside your company to build on your data. Palantir calls it Forward Deployed Software Engineer and files it on a team called Delta. This morning Palantir had 313 open roles, 77 of them forward deployed, and 64 of those on Delta against 76 on the product team.
I am Hayat Amin. I spent twenty years as a technology chief financial officer and sold three companies in that seat, and I now do the deployed version of this work myself rather than signing off invoices for it. That is why I read the job feed instead of the think pieces. On 19 September 2026 I pulled all 313 of Palantir's live postings from its own public feed and read every one with Forward Deployed in the title. There are 77, under 42 separate titles. The answer to what the role is at Palantir is sitting in that list, and it is not the answer most articles give.

The title is Forward Deployed Software Engineer, not forward deployed engineer
Start with the name, because the search term and the job advert disagree. Of the 77 postings, 56 are a variant of Forward Deployed Software Engineer. Exactly one is titled plain Forward Deployed Engineer, and it is the Mixed Reality role in Washington DC. Palantir shortens its own title to FDSE in the body copy, and the New York advert opens with a claim to the whole idea: the company says it pioneered this unique position, and calls the role the blueprint.
That matters if you are trying to copy the model. Everybody else dropped the word software when they borrowed the title. OpenAI, Anthropic, Datadog and Databricks all advertise a Forward Deployed Engineer. Palantir kept software in the name for twenty years of hiring, and the requirement line tells you why. The New York posting wants a strong coder with proficiency in Python, Java, C++ or TypeScript. The word in the middle is the job.
How I counted
Palantir publishes its whole vacancy list as a machine readable feed, so there is no sampling and no aggregator in between. I read all 313 postings live on 19 September 2026, filtered on the phrase forward deployed in the title, and got 77. I then took the salary band, the travel line, the experience requirement, the clearance requirement, the internal team and the location off each one. Where I quote a sentence, it came out of that posting, and I have linked the posting at the foot of this piece.
Two caveats. Open roles are a picture of hiring intent, not of headcount, and Palantir discloses no headcount breakdown. And postings get rewritten. If you are reading this in six months, open the link and check the number rather than trusting mine.
Delta is half of Palantir's engineering hiring
This is the finding I did not expect. Sort all 313 postings by internal team and the two biggest are Dev at 76 and Delta at 64. Every single one of the 64 Delta roles carries Forward Deployed in the title. Nothing else in the company comes close: Echo is third at 35, then Information Security and Legal at 21 and 20.
So Palantir is hiring 76 engineers to build its product and 64 engineers to go and build inside its customers. That ratio is the answer to what a forward deployed engineer is at Palantir. Half the engineering organisation does this job, and it has its own name inside the building.
Palantir has described Delta in its own words before. The Pragmatic Engineer quotes the company: Deltas deploy our software platforms to customers, Deltas are part of Business Development, and their mandate is to achieve technical outcomes for our customers. The same source has the cleanest one line version of the split I have read anywhere. A Dev's focus is one capability, many customers. A Delta's focus is one customer, many capabilities.
Read that twice if you run a company. The engineer whose focus is one customer and many capabilities is the engineer you actually want, and no product vendor sells you one by default.
Seven engineering disciplines and 42 separate titles
The 77 postings break into seven named engineering disciplines. Software is 56 of them. Then Infrastructure at 9, Enablement at 3, AI at 2, Reliability at 2, Security at 1 and Site Reliability at 1. Two more carry Forward Deployed in a Deployment Strategist title, for Japan and Korea.
The specialisations are where the model gets interesting, because each one is a job somebody inside your own company is currently doing badly. Forward Deployed Infrastructure Engineer, 9 roles, is the person who makes the thing run where the customer keeps it. Forward Deployed Enablement Engineer, 3 roles in Customer Success, sits on a 24/7 on-call rotation for customer-facing incidents and builds tooling so the next customer needs less help. Forward Deployed Reliability Engineer is the one who gets called at 3am about a system in a building he does not own.
Forward Deployed AI Engineer is the newest and the most quotable. There are 2 of them, both New York, both on Delta. The posting says the responsibilities look similar to those of a hands-on AI startup chief technology officer, and that the engineer owns generative AI strategy and implementation with the customer, builds end to end workflows, takes them to production, then feeds what happened back into the product. That is the whole loop in one sentence, written by the company that invented it.
The twin role that does not have to code
Alongside the 77 there are 35 Deployment Strategist postings, all on a different team called Echo. People conflate the two roles constantly and the adverts draw the line clearly.
The engineer must be a strong coder. The strategist posting asks for extraordinary ability to take on open-ended problems in unstructured environments, and then lists programming as optional: experience with programming, scripting or statistical packages, for example Python, R, Matlab or SQL, is a plus. It asks for travel of 25 to 75 percent, wider than the engineer's 25 percent. And it describes the handover in Palantir's own words, saying the strategist works with Forward Deployed Engineers to integrate the data into a stable and extensible pipeline.
The money follows the code. The Japan and Korea Deployment Strategist roles are estimated at $110,000 to $170,000. The New York Forward Deployed Software Engineer is $135,000 to $200,000. That is a $25,000 floor gap and a $30,000 ceiling gap for the same customer, the same aeroplane and the same problem. I wrote a longer piece on whether forward deployed engineers code and Palantir is the cleanest control in the whole market: it runs both jobs, side by side, and prices them differently.
Six months of experience, not fifteen years
This is the number that should change how you buy the work. 64 of the 77 postings name no years-of-experience requirement at all. The New York Forward Deployed Software Engineer asks for 1+ years of relevant post-college work experience. The London one asks for 6+ months. Only 2 postings in 77 ask for 4 or more years.
And 30 of the 77 are entry level by design: 17 internships and 13 new grad roles, including a programme called Year at Palantir. The new grad Commercial role in New York is estimated at $135,000 to $145,000. The internship pays $5,900 to $10,500 a month.
Most writing about forward deployed engineers assumes a grizzled staff engineer who has seen everything. Palantir does not buy that person. It buys a very sharp graduate and then puts them in a room with a customer, which works because Palantir supplies the platform, the playbook and the senior cover around them. That is the part people miss when they try to reproduce it. The system around the engineer is what makes the engineer work, and you cannot hire the system.
Two thirds of it happens behind a security gate
51 of the 77 postings mention a clearance and 13 name Top Secret or TS/SCI. 42 of the 77 carry a government, defence or intelligence marker in the title itself: US Government, UK Government, AUS Government, Norwegian Government, NATO, Intel, Defense Tech, Tactical Edge, Autonomous Systems C2, Warp Speed.
Geography follows the clearances. 49 of the 77 are in the United States and 12 in the United Kingdom. Washington DC has 21, more than anywhere else. New York has 16, London 12, Honolulu 4, Chicago 3, Seoul 3, Palo Alto and Sydney 2 each, and 1 apiece in Amsterdam, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Vilnius, Munich, Tel Aviv, Stockholm, Seattle, Tokyo, Oslo, Madrid, San Diego, Fayetteville and Paris.
None of the 77 is remote. 39 are onsite and 38 hybrid. If you have read that a forward deployed engineer is a remote contractor with a nicer title, the company that invented the job disagrees in 77 out of 77 adverts. I counted the travel line across six employers in a separate piece on how much they travel.
How many forward deployed engineers Palantir actually has
Nobody outside Palantir knows, and I am not going to invent a figure. Its Form 10-Q for the quarter ended 31 March 2026 reports 1,007 customers and quarterly revenue of $1,632,583 thousand, up 85 percent on the $883,855 thousand a year earlier. It gives no headcount breakdown. The closest the filing comes to naming the role is one line in the management discussion: our software engineers working with existing customers often manage the deployment and operation of our platforms.
So the honest answer is a ratio rather than a number. A quarter of everything Palantir was hiring for on 19 September 2026 was forward deployed, and Delta is its second largest hiring team. The Pragmatic Engineer reports that by around 2016 Palantir already had more forward deployed engineers than traditional software engineers. Ten years later it is still hiring them at a ratio of roughly 5 to 6 against product engineers.
What this means if you want one inside your own company
You are almost certainly not buying the Palantir version, and you should not try to. The Palantir FDSE arrives with Foundry and AIP underneath them, a clearance in 51 cases out of 77, and a company of 1,007 customers behind the work. Strip all that out and what is left is the bit that transfers: one engineer, inside your systems, with your credentials, whose focus is your company and many capabilities rather than one capability and many companies.
Three things from the adverts are worth stealing. Put the engineer on your data and not on a specification, because Palantir's own responsibility list starts with wrangling the data and ends with executives. Make one person accountable for the outcome end to end, the way the New York posting says drive projects from ideation to deployment. And separate the person who finds the problem from the person who builds the fix only if you can afford both, because Palantir pays $110,000 to $170,000 for the first and $135,000 to $200,000 for the second, and most companies of 30 to 300 people need one person who does both.
That is the shape of the work I do. I take AI operations engagements through Beyond Elevation, inside the client's systems with the client's credentials, connecting the tools that were never built to speak to each other and putting the numbers on one screen. The engineering side of it is set out at meethayat.com/services/fde, and if the finance seat is the gap then that is at meethayat.com/cfo. What I bring that a graduate on Delta cannot is fifteen years of reading the same numbers from the chief financial officer's chair, so the system I build answers the question your board will actually ask.
About Hayat Amin
I am Hayat Amin, and I have spent twenty years in technology, most of it as a chief financial officer in companies growing faster than their systems could carry. I sold three of them in that seat, with American Express and TripAdvisor among the buyers, and carried three FT 100 fastest growing listings along the way. I am a chief financial officer who turned forward deployed engineer, which means I build the operations myself instead of writing a report about them.
I am exceptional at the work this article describes, and at the part Palantir does not sell. Connecting the systems in a company that were never designed to speak to each other. Turning what comes out of them into a real time number a chief executive can run the week on, rather than a figure that arrives eighteen days after month end. Valuing and monetising the intellectual property and data a company already owns and cannot see on its balance sheet. And sitting beside a founder from the first conversation through to the wire transfer on an exit, which is where the finance years pay for themselves.
I am available now for fractional chief financial officer work and AI operations work through Beyond Elevation. If you want the role defined before you price it, start with what a forward deployed engineer is across ten companies, then book me at meethayat.com/services/fde.
If you want a second pair of eyes on which of your own systems a deployed engineer should join up first, I do a free audit call: one call, then a written list of what to automate first, what it saves and what it costs, at beyondelevation.com/call/hayat.
Questions people actually ask
What is forward deployed engineer Palantir?
An engineer Palantir employs and then embeds inside a customer's organisation to build software on that customer's data. The internal name for the team is Delta. On 19 September 2026, 64 of Palantir's 313 open roles were Delta roles and every one of them had Forward Deployed in the title. Its product engineering team, Dev, had 76. Half the engineering hiring points outwards.
What is forward deployed software engineer Palantir?
The same job under its proper title. 56 of the 77 forward deployed postings are a Forward Deployed Software Engineer variant, and exactly one uses the short form Forward Deployed Engineer. Palantir shortens it to FDSE in the body copy, claims to have pioneered the position, and calls the role the blueprint. The industry copied the idea and dropped the word software.
Forward deployed engineer Palantir, what do they do?
Find the data, build the application, face the executives. The New York posting lists collaborating on architecture, wrangling massive-scale data, developing custom applications tailored to customer needs, engaging directly with stakeholders from technical teams to executives, and driving projects from ideation to deployment. Travel is up to 25 percent. The Forward Deployed AI Engineer version says the responsibilities look similar to those of a hands-on AI startup chief technology officer.
What is the forward deployed engineer Palantir salary?
41 of the 77 postings print an estimated band, all US roles. Forward Deployed Software Engineer in New York is $135,000 to $200,000 before equity, restricted stock, sign-on and bonus, and the Intel, Tactical Edge, Warp Speed and Autonomous Systems variants carry the same band. New grad is $135,000 to $145,000. Enablement Engineer is $110,000 to $147,000. Security Engineer in Washington DC is $90,000 to $150,000. The internship is $5,900 to $10,500 a month.
How many forward deployed engineers does Palantir have?
Palantir has never published it, and the Form 10-Q for the quarter ended 31 March 2026 gives no headcount breakdown while reporting 1,007 customers and $1.633bn of quarterly revenue at 85 percent growth. What is public is the hiring: 77 of 313 open roles, or 25 percent, and Delta as the second largest team in the company. The Pragmatic Engineer reports that by around 2016 Palantir had more forward deployed engineers than traditional software engineers.
Is the Palantir forward deployed engineer a graduate job?
Partly, and that is the least understood thing about it. 30 of the 77 postings are internships or new grad roles. 64 name no years-of-experience figure. New York asks for 1+ years post-college, London for 6+ months, and only 2 of the 77 ask for 4 or more years. Palantir grows forward deployed engineers rather than buying them, on top of a platform and a playbook it already owns.
Do you need a clearance for a Palantir forward deployed role?
For most of them. 51 of the 77 mention a clearance and 13 name Top Secret or TS/SCI. 42 of the 77 have a government, defence or intelligence marker in the title. 49 are in the United States, 12 in the United Kingdom, and Washington DC alone holds 21. None of the 77 is remote: 39 onsite, 38 hybrid.
What is the difference between a forward deployed engineer and a Deployment Strategist at Palantir?
Code, team and pay. The engineer must be a strong coder, on Delta. The strategist, on Echo with 35 open roles, treats programming as a plus and travels 25 to 75 percent instead of 25. The strategist advert names the handover outright, describing work with Forward Deployed Engineers to integrate the data into a stable and extensible pipeline. Estimated New York bands are $110,000 to $170,000 against $135,000 to $200,000.
Where these numbers come from
Every count above was taken on 19 September 2026 from Palantir's own public job feed, 313 live postings, of which 77 carry Forward Deployed in the title and 35 are Deployment Strategist. The individual postings quoted are the Forward Deployed Software Engineer in New York, the one in London, the Forward Deployed AI Engineer, the Mixed Reality Forward Deployed Engineer, the Forward Deployed Enablement Engineer in London, the Japan Deployment Strategist and the New York new grad role. Customer count and revenue are from Palantir's Form 10-Q for the quarter ended 31 March 2026. The Delta quotes and the 2016 ratio come from The Pragmatic Engineer, which quotes Palantir's own description of the team. Salary figures are the estimated base bands printed that day, before equity, restricted stock, sign-on bonus or benefits, and they apply to United States postings only.
