What Is a Forward Deployed Product Manager?

Someone who owns the product outcome inside one customer's building, decides what gets built for that customer and what gets refused, and hands the build to a forward deployed engineer. Scale AI puts it in its own posting: this is not a roadmap PM, a CSM, or a solutions engineer.

I am Hayat Amin. I spent twenty years as a technology chief financial officer and sold three companies in that seat, and I now do the forward deployed work myself inside other people's systems, which means I have sat in both chairs this job sits between. This morning I read 6,034 live job postings from 29 employers' own feeds. 299 are forward deployed. 186 are product manager roles. Exactly 9 are both, and they are at four companies. Below is every one of them, what each pays, what each is good for, and who each is wrong for.

Why I counted instead of defining

Google shows my pages for this phrase and nobody clicks. Between 20 August and 19 September 2026 my three sites drew 207 impressions across 48 queries and got 8 clicks. 49 of those impressions, almost a quarter, came from people typing some version of forward deployed product manager. Zero clicks. The best position was 5. The page Google was offering them compares a forward deployed engineer with a product manager, which is a different question from the one they asked.

So I stopped guessing. On 20 September 2026 I pulled 29 employers' own job feeds, the ones their applicant tracking systems publish, and read every title. 6,034 live postings. 299 carry forward deployed. 186 carry product manager. The intersection is 9 postings at 4 companies: Scale AI with 4, Cresta with 3, Ode with Anthropic with 1, Abridge with 1. That is the whole job market for this title, on that morning, at those 29 employers.

I have ordered the nine by the top of the published pay range in United States dollars, highest first, with the three that publish no number last. Two cautions on that ranking. Cresta publishes on target earnings, which includes variable pay, and Ode publishes estimated total cash, so neither is the same measure as a base salary band. And a wide band is a range across levels, not an offer.

The 9 live forward deployed product manager jobs

1. Scale AI, Forward Deployed Product Manager, Public Sector

New York and Washington DC. $210,000 to $345,000 base in San Francisco, New York and Seattle, and $200,000 to $311,000 in Washington DC, Texas, Colorado and Hawaii. 6 or more years. It is the best paid posting of the nine and the only one that requires an active TOP SECRET clearance, with TS/SCI eligibility preferred. The work is military planning and a real-time alerting product Scale calls LUX, and the posting asks for working knowledge of the Joint Planning Process and the simulation tool AFSIM, or of event driven streaming architectures. It names Kafka, Flink and Kinesis as nice to have.

Good for someone who has already shipped software inside a classified environment and knows what production means there. Wrong for anyone without the clearance, because you cannot acquire one to take a job, and wrong for anyone who wants to build one thing well: the posting asks you to balance competing requirements across combatant commands and service components that must collaborate despite differing needs.

2. Scale AI, Forward Deployed Product Manager, Enterprise, New York

$240,000 to $300,000 base. 6 or more years. This is the posting I would hand to anyone who wants the definition, because Scale wrote the definition into it. This is not a roadmap PM, a CSM, or a solutions engineer. The FDPM owns product outcomes inside a portfolio of enterprise accounts. It asks you to distinguish where the product is the constraint from where execution, integration or change management is, and to drive each type of blocker through the right channel. It also wants evidence, not pilots: you can name the customer, the scale, the integration, and what production actually looked like.

Good for a product manager who has carried a large organisation from contract to production and has the scars to describe it. Wrong for a pure platform PM, and wrong for anyone who needs defined requirements, since the posting says so in plain words: does not wait for fully defined requirements.

3. Abridge, Forward Deployed Product Manager, San Francisco

$260,000 to $290,000 plus equity, in the San Francisco office on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with New York listed as a second location. 7 or more years, the longest ask of the nine. Abridge builds clinical documentation for health systems, and the posting says it is launching a forward deployed engineering motion and hiring founding forward deployed product managers. You go on site, scope the engagement with the partner, lead a pod through a sprint-style engagement, and own the outcome. Travel is put at around 20 percent, with surges at kickoff and go live.

Good for a senior product person who can hold a room with a chief medical officer, a chief medical information officer and a chief information officer at once, which is the list the posting names. Familiarity with Epic is a bonus, not a requirement. Wrong for anyone who will not relocate, because the posting asks you not to apply otherwise, and wrong for anyone who cannot say no: the job explicitly includes holding the line on bespoke requests that do not generalise back to the core product.

4. Cresta, Forward Deployed Product Manager, AI Agent, United States

Remote in the United States. On target earnings of $170,000 to $280,000 plus equity. 5 or more years in technology consulting, implementations, product or customer success. Cresta builds contact centre AI, and names United Airlines, Cox Communications and Marriott as customers. It has raised more than $270 million from a16z, Greylock and Sequoia, and its chief executive Ping Wu founded and led Google's Contact Center AI and Vertex AI platforms. The posting is the clearest of the nine on the pairing: you partner with forward deployed engineers who support the build, the integrations and the optimisation.

Good for someone who wants to own a metric rather than a backlog. The posting asks you to own the outcomes and find additional automation opportunities, and it counts personal agent projects as evidence. Wrong for anyone who wants to stay out of pre-sales, because the lifecycle it hands you starts at pre-sale scoping.

5. Ode with Anthropic, Forward Deployed Product Manager

San Francisco or New York, on site. Estimated total cash of $200,000 to $275,000 plus equity. Published on 16 September 2026, the newest of the nine. Ode is Anthropic's services venture, backed by Anthropic, Blackstone, Hellman and Friedman, Goldman Sachs, General Atlantic, Leonard Green and Partners, Apollo Global Management, GIC and Sequoia Capital, with offices in San Francisco, New York, Raleigh-Durham and Dubai. The posting cuts the role into four: part product manager, part engagement manager, part delivery manager, part do whatever it takes operator. It asks for around 4 years and then says it cares more about what you have done than the label on your CV.

Good for someone who wants volume. A typical product manager there ships two or three products a year and learns from dozens more, which is the fastest way I know to build judgement about what works. Wrong for a craftsperson: Ode says outright that you will not have a year to polish a single system, and recommends you use the interview to hear whether you would hate it.

6. Cresta, Associate Forward Deployed Product Manager

Remote in the United States. On target earnings of $130,000 to $170,000 plus equity. 2 or more years, and this is the only entry point of the nine. The posting names product management, consulting, implementations, customer or sales engineering, revenue and sales analysis, investment banking and founder as backgrounds it will take. You work alongside senior forward deployed product managers and forward deployed engineers rather than owning an account.

Good for a two year analyst or a founder whose company did not work, because it is the one door into this job that does not require a decade first. Wrong for a senior product manager, who would be underpaid by roughly $110,000 at the top of the band against the same company's full role.

7. Cresta, Forward Deployed Product Manager, AI Agent, EMEA

Remote in the United Kingdom. No pay published. Same 5 year ask and the same brief as the American posting, for European accounts. It is one of three postings in the nine that sit outside the United States, and all three publish no number, which is the honest state of British and European pay transparency.

Good for a London or European operator who wants the American job without moving, and it is remote rather than hybrid. Wrong for anyone who needs to know the money before they spend six weeks interviewing, and wrong if you want the frontier accounts, which sit in the United States.

8. Scale AI, Forward Deployed Product Manager, Enterprise, London

No pay published. 4 or more years building machine learning powered products, and a technical degree or equivalent. This is the only one of the nine that asks for coding, and it asks quietly: some coding experience in Python. The posting names the applications Scale builds this way, which is the most useful part of it. Content generation for sales teams. Wealth management copilots that let an adviser reach a knowledge base quickly. Text to SQL business intelligence so analysts stop queuing for the data team.

Good for a technical product manager who wants to see many industries rather than one, since it asks you to turn bespoke builds into repeatable software. Wrong for a pure business product manager, because of the Python line, and wrong for anyone who wants a single long engagement.

9. Scale AI, Head of Product Management, Forward Deployed and Strategy

London. No pay published. 10 or more years of product leadership, including 4 or more managing product management teams. Updated on 18 September 2026. This is the only management role of the nine, and it exists because of a problem the other eight create. You hire, mentor and deploy product managers across Fortune 100 and government accounts, then decide which bespoke solutions should move from custom to core product. The posting also asks you to unblock high priority deployments in what it calls red zones.

Good for a product leader who has run forward deployed or top tier implementation teams and is comfortable with APIs, data pipelines and SQL, which the posting asks for. Wrong for a roadmap director, and wrong for anyone who has not managed managers, since the ask is explicit.

What all nine agree on

I counted the language across all 9 postings rather than trusting my impression of them. 9 of 9 use the word deploy. 9 of 9 name a senior executive as the counterparty, from chief information officer to flag officer. 9 of 9 use ownership language about an outcome rather than a feature. 8 of 9 name ambiguity as a condition of the job. 7 of 9 name integration.

6 of 9 name the forward deployed engineer directly, as the person who builds what the product manager scoped. That pairing is the actual definition, and it is why the job appeared now. Somebody has to decide what the customer gets and somebody has to build it in the customer's systems, and when one person tries to do both, the deciding is what gets dropped.

4 of 9 mention travel and only 1 requires a clearance, which makes this a lighter job on the road than the engineering version. I counted the travel line across 108 forward deployed engineering postings earlier this week and most of them cap it at half your time. 5 of 9 mention code, and only the London posting asks for it. Two postings draw the line in the same sentence: technical fluency sufficient to hold a real conversation with a platform engineer about architectural tradeoffs, not deep coding.

Palantir invented forward deployment and has no product managers

Palantir had 313 live postings this morning. 77 are forward deployed, which I went through title by title yesterday. The number of postings with product manager in the title, forward deployed or otherwise, is zero. Not one, in 313.

Palantir uses an older name for the chair. It has 35 live Deployment Strategist roles, and the Deployment Strategist is the person who works out what the customer needs while the Forward Deployed Software Engineer builds it. The New York bands, read this morning, are $110,000 to $170,000 for the Deployment Strategist and $135,000 to $200,000 for the engineer.

Hold that against Scale AI paying $240,000 to $300,000 base for the same chair in the same city. The two bands sit exactly $130,000 apart at both ends, which is my subtraction off their published numbers. That distance measures a different buyer. Palantir hires young into a twenty year old apprenticeship and promotes through it. Scale, Abridge and Ode are buying someone who has already carried an enterprise deployment to production somewhere else, because they do not have twenty years to train one. That is what the new title is actually signalling, and it is why it arrived at applied AI companies rather than at Palantir.

The other absences are as loud. OpenAI has 21 forward deployed roles and 10 product manager roles and no overlap between them. Databricks has 100 forward deployed roles and 26 product manager roles, again no overlap. Anthropic itself has 7 forward deployed roles and 17 product manager roles and no overlap, while Ode, its services venture, has one of each. Glean has a Founding Forward Deployed Engineer and 14 product managers, and Google completes the phrase forward deployed product manager glean anyway. So does forward deployed product manager fireworks ai, at a company with 79 live roles and none of them forward deployed. People are searching for a title that mostly is not there yet.

What this means if you are hiring one

If you run a company of 20 to 500 people, you are not hiring this person, and you should know why. 5 of the 9 postings are in New York or San Francisco, 6 of the 9 want on site or hybrid presence, and the six published bands start at $130,000. The role exists at a software vendor that has many customers and needs its field learning carried back into one product. You have one company and no platform team to carry anything back to.

What you need from the same idea is narrower. Somebody who sits with your operation, decides which of your processes is worth automating, builds it against your live systems with your credentials, and tells you no when the thing you asked for will not pay for itself. When one person does the deciding and the building, you do not need the handover the nine postings are all designed around, and you do not pay for two seats. That pairing is what a forward deployed engineer is for at your size, and the engineer version does write the code.

If you are a vendor with a platform and a field, the nine postings are a free specification. Take Scale's sentence about distinguishing where the product is the constraint from where execution is, take Abridge's line about declining what does not generalise, and give the person the authority both sentences imply. Without that authority you have hired a project manager and called them something else, which is the failure mode I see most often.

Cresta is where the phrase is most searched and Google completes forward deployed product manager cresta and forward deployed product manager ai agent cresta. The job there is to create, deploy and optimise the AI agents that run in a customer's contact centre, from pre-sale scoping to post launch optimisation, partnered with a forward deployed engineer who does the build and the integrations. Cresta names United Airlines, Cox Communications and Marriott as customers, and has three of these roles open, one of them at associate level.

Does OpenAI hire forward deployed product managers?

No. OpenAI had 818 live postings this morning, 21 of them forward deployed and 10 of them product manager roles, with no title carrying both. The senior door wants 6 or 7 years and a deployment you can describe in detail, naming the customer, the scale, the integration and what production looked like. There is no third door and no certificate, and nobody in the nine asks for one.
