Forward Deployed Engineer vs Product Engineer
A product engineer builds one product for every user. A forward deployed engineer builds inside one customer's systems until the product works there. At the 10 companies hiring both titles this morning, 26 of 41 forward deployed postings mention travel. 1 of 32 product engineer postings does.
I'm Hayat Amin. I spent twenty years as a technology chief financial officer, sold three companies in that seat, and now do forward deployed work myself inside other people's systems. On 1 October 2026 I pulled 8,711 live postings from 57 employers' own job feeds and read both job titles side by side, at the same companies, in the same cities. Below are the 7 pairs that publish pay, what each side is good for, and who each is wrong for.

Why I compared them at the same company
Google shows my pages for fde vs product engineer and nobody clicks. Between 20 August and 30 September 2026 that phrase drew 6 impressions at a best position of 4.3, and forward deployed product engineer and forward product engineer drew 2 each. All of them landed on a page comparing a forward deployed engineer with a product manager, which answers a different question.
Comparing the two titles across the whole market tells you very little, because Databricks and Palantir alone carry 181 of the 335 forward deployed postings I found and neither has a single product engineer title. So I kept only the employers that hire both. 26 employers have at least one forward deployed engineering posting, 18 have at least one product engineer posting, and 10 have both: Anthropic, Attio, Brex, Cresta, Hightouch, Intercom, OpenAI, Replit, Stripe and Tennr. Same company, same pay philosophy, same product. The difference left over is the job.
Not one of the 8,711 titles carries both phrases. Google completes forward deployed product engineer anyway, so I'll answer that in the questions at the end.
What the 73 postings at those 10 companies say
41 are forward deployed engineering roles and 32 are product engineer roles, excluding managers and interns. I counted words in every one.
- Travel: 26 of 41 forward deployed postings, 1 of 32 product engineer postings. The one is Anthropic's Product Engineer for Manufacturing Operations, which travels up to 50 percent to partner factories.
- Executives or stakeholders: 33 of 41 against 6 of 32.
- The word users: 11 of 41 against 28 of 32. Every one of the 41 forward deployed postings says customer instead.
- Python: 28 of 41 against 14 of 32.
- React: 1 of 41 against 6 of 32. TypeScript: 5 of 41 against 11 of 32.
That's the whole difference in five lines. The forward deployed engineer works for a named customer, in Python, with a stakeholder in the room and a bag packed. The product engineer works for users in the plural, mostly in the browser, from the office. Both write production code, which I covered in do forward deployed engineers code.
The 7 companies hiring both, side by side
I've ordered them by the top of the forward deployed posting's published base band in US dollars, highest first. Every band below was read on the employer's own posting this morning. A band is a range across levels, not an offer, and three of the seven pairs are not the same seniority on both sides, which I flag where it matters.
1. Anthropic: Forward Deployed Engineer vs Product Engineer, Computer Use
Both in New York, San Francisco or Seattle. The forward deployed engineer is $280,000 to $320,000 and the product engineer is $300,000 to $320,000, the tightest pair of the seven. The FDE embeds with Anthropic's most strategic customers, works inside customer systems to build production applications on Claude, delivers MCP servers, sub-agents and agent skills, and lists potential travel to customer sites. It asks for 4 or more years in a technical, customer facing role. The product engineer builds the computer use product itself, with no layers between you and the model or the user, in the posting's words.
Pick the forward deployed side if you'd rather see Claude land in a bank's workflow than tune the agent harness. Wrong for you if you dislike discovery calls, because the posting asks you to conduct discovery with customers and to represent Anthropic at the highest level in customer environments. Anthropic's other product engineer posting, Manufacturing Operations, pays $320,000 to $405,000 with up to 50 percent travel to factories, the highest floor of any posting on this page, and the one product engineer in 32 who travels.
2. OpenAI: Forward Deployed Engineer vs Product Engineer, Full Stack, Agents
Both in San Francisco. The forward deployed engineer is $185,000 to $300,000 with equity, 5 or more years, 3 days a week in the office, and travel up to 50 percent is required. You own discovery, scoping, system design, build and production rollout alongside the customer's own engineers. The product engineer is $266,000 to $445,000 with equity and asks for 7 or more years, strong TypeScript and React, and roughly equal time on frontend surfaces and the backend that keeps agents running.
The $145,000 gap between the two band ceilings is my subtraction, and it's mostly the 2 extra years. Pick the FDE side if you want to see the model meet a real enterprise before most people do. Wrong for you if you can't be away half the time, because OpenAI is the only one of the seven to put a hard number on travel.
3. Replit: Forward Deployed Engineer vs Product Engineer, New Products
Both in Foster City, California. The forward deployed engineer is $180,000 to $300,000 with equity and 5 or more years. The product engineer is $180,000 to $250,000 with equity and a performance bonus, 4 or more years, in the office Monday, Wednesday and Friday, shipping in three week sprints. Replit is the only pair here where the forward deployed band runs higher and asks for more experience.
Replit's FDE posting has the clearest line I read all morning on what the job is. You won't just advise customers on what to build, you'll build alongside them, connecting Replit to their SSO, data warehouses, internal APIs and SaaS systems, then ship the best patterns back to the platform. Pick the product side if you care about typography, motion and accessibility, which that posting names. Wrong for you if you want a customer's identity provider to be your problem.
4. Brex: Forward Deployed Agent Builder vs Senior Backend Engineer, Product Engineering
The forward deployed role is in San Francisco or New York at $152,000 to $240,000 and 4 or more years. The product engineering role is in New York, San Francisco or Seattle at $192,000 to $240,000 and 7 or more years. Both are in the office Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.
This pair is the odd one, and the one I'd show any chief executive. Brex's forward deployed engineer has no outside customer. You embed with teams across the company, learn how they work, then build and ship agents alongside the people whose work you're automating, and the posting gives bonus points for back office automation over customer facing features. That's forward deployment pointed inward. Wrong for you if you want a product with your name on the release notes. Wrong for the product side if you've never owned a backend system at scale, because that role is 7 years and backend only.
5. Cresta: Senior Forward Deployed Engineer vs Senior Product Engineer
Both remote in the United States. The forward deployed engineer is $185,000 to $235,000 base plus an annual bonus and equity, 3 or more years, Python and Golang. The product engineer is $190,000 to $270,000 and 5 or more years. Cresta builds AI agents for contact centres and names United Airlines, Cox Communications and Marriott as customers.
The FDE runs demos and proofs of concept for prospective customers, so this one sits partly in the sale. The product engineer builds zero to one AI product experiences and validates them with real users. Pick the FDE side if you're 3 years in and want customer exposure fast, since 3 years is the lowest ask of any posting titled senior on this page. Wrong for you if you don't want to present to a buyer.
6. Hightouch: Forward Deployed Engineer vs Full Stack Product Engineer
Both remote in North America. The forward deployed engineer is $150,000 to $225,000 and asks for 2 to 4 years in analytics engineering, solutions engineering or implementation. The product engineer is $180,000 to $400,000, fully remote and location independent, with React and TypeScript on the front and TypeScript and some Go behind it.
Hightouch's FDE is a data job more than a code job. Most debugging, the posting says, involves writing SQL against customer warehouses and reading server logs, and the expertise frequently leads to advising executives at Fortune 500 companies. Pick it if you like messy data and someone else's warehouse. The product side's $400,000 ceiling is $175,000 above the FDE's, which is my subtraction, so it's wrong for you if pay is the deciding number and you write good React.
7. Tennr: Senior Forward Deployed Engineer, Post-Sales vs Senior Product Engineer
Both at 345 Hudson Street in New York City, in the office 4 days a week. The forward deployed engineer is $160,000 to $180,000 base plus a $40,000 to $50,000 bonus, 4 or more years in enterprise SaaS delivery. The product engineer is $190,000 to $215,000 base plus a $38,000 to $64,500 bonus, 5 or more years, JavaScript and TypeScript.
Tennr sells to health systems and national provider groups, and this FDE is the most consultant shaped of the seven. The posting asks for executive presence, the ability to align cross functional stakeholders, and a background in consulting, solution architecture or technical customer success. Pick it if you've run enterprise implementations and want to do it with automation. Wrong for you if you want to write most of the code, because the posting is about leading delivery.
Three that hire both and didn't make a fair pair
Intercom has forward deployed engineers in Chicago and San Francisco at $180,000 to $200,000, and all 10 of its product engineer postings are in Dublin, London or Berlin with no band, so there's no same-city comparison. Attio has a Forward Deployed GTM Engineer in New York and San Francisco at $150,000 to $200,000, and its product engineers sit in London at £80,000 to £125,000 and in Poland. Stripe's forward deployed engineers are with Privy in New York and in security in Dublin, with no band, against one product engineer posting in Toronto. The split tells you something on its own: in these postings Intercom and Attio build the product in Europe and put the forward deployed seat in the United States, next to the customers.
What the seven pairs agree on
The product engineer's floor is at or above the forward deployed engineer's floor in all 7 pairs, and higher in 6. The product engineer's ceiling is higher in 4, equal in 2 and lower in 1, which is Replit. Where both postings state years, the product engineer asks for more in 4 of 5. So the honest reading is that these companies pay for product seniority, and the forward deployed premium people talk about isn't visible in a same-company comparison. What the forward deployed seat buys is a different week: the customer's building, the customer's credentials, the customer's executive, and a bag.
If you're choosing between the two, I'd ask one question. Do you want to be judged by how many people use the thing, or by whether one named customer's operation runs on it? The product engineer's metric is adoption. The forward deployed engineer's metric is a go live date and a person who will tell you whether it worked. I wrote about how much of the week is spent away in do forward deployed engineers travel, and the role itself in what is a forward deployed engineer.
What this means if you run a company
If you run a company of 20 to 500 people, you're not hiring either of these. Both exist at software vendors that have one product and many customers. The product engineer improves the product for all of them. The forward deployed engineer makes it work for one at a time and carries the lessons back. You have one company and no product team to carry anything back to.
What you can take from the forward deployed side is the method. Somebody sits with your team, learns how the work moves between your systems, builds against your live accounts, and stays until it runs. Brex's posting is that job pointed at its own back office, and it's the closest thing on this page to what an owner needs. That's the work I do through Beyond Elevation, on a fixed scope, inside your own systems with your own credentials, set out at meethayat.com/services/fde.
About Hayat Amin
I'm Hayat Amin, and I have spent twenty years in technology, most of them as a chief financial officer in companies growing faster than their systems could carry. I sold three of them in that seat, with American Express and TripAdvisor among the buyers, and carried three FT 100 fastest growing listings along the way. I read job postings the way I read a cap table: the band and the years asked for tell you what a company thinks a job is worth.
I'm exceptional at the forward deployed half of this comparison, because I do it from the finance side. I connect the systems in a company that were never built to talk to each other, I turn what comes out of them into a live number a chief executive can run the week on instead of a month end pack, and I value and monetise the intellectual property and data a company already owns. I also sit beside founders from the first conversation to the wire transfer on an exit. A chief financial officer who builds the integration himself is a rarer pair than either half.
I'm available now for fractional chief financial officer work and AI operations work through Beyond Elevation.
If you want a second pair of eyes on which of your processes to automate first, I do a free audit call: one call, then a written list of what to automate first, what it saves and what it costs, at beyondelevation.com/call/hayat.
Questions people actually ask
FDE vs product engineer: what is the difference?
A product engineer builds one product for every user. A forward deployed engineer builds inside one customer's systems until that product works there. At the 10 companies hiring both on 1 October 2026, 26 of 41 forward deployed postings mention travel against 1 of 32 product engineer postings, 33 of 41 mention executives or stakeholders against 6 of 32, and 28 of 32 product engineer postings talk about users while every forward deployed one talks about customers.
What is a forward deployed product engineer?
Not a title anyone is hiring for yet. Google completes forward deployed product engineer and forward deployed ai product engineer, but none of the 8,711 live postings I read across 57 employers on 1 October 2026 carries both phrases. People who type it usually mean a forward deployed engineer who also shapes the product, which is what Replit's posting describes when it says ship the best patterns back to the platform.
Do forward deployed engineers get paid more than product engineers?
Not at the same company, going by published bands on 1 October 2026. In 7 pairs at Anthropic, OpenAI, Replit, Brex, Cresta, Hightouch and Tennr, the product engineer's floor is at or above the forward deployed engineer's in all 7, and the ceiling is higher in 4. The product engineer postings also ask for more years in 4 of the 5 pairs where both state it. Replit is the exception, at $180,000 to $300,000 for the FDE against $180,000 to $250,000 plus bonus for the product engineer.
Do product engineers travel?
Rarely. 1 of 32 product engineer postings at the 10 companies hiring both titles mentions travel, Anthropic's Product Engineer for Manufacturing Operations, at up to 50 percent to partner factories and $320,000 to $405,000. 26 of the 41 forward deployed postings at the same companies mention it, and OpenAI's requires up to 50 percent.
Product engineer vs software engineer: what is the difference?
A product engineer is a software engineer who owns a feature from idea to launch to measurement, with design and user feedback in the loop. The postings say it in their verbs: Replit's asks you to own product experiences from concept through design, implementation, launch and measurement, and OpenAI's asks for a track record of shipping polished user-facing products. 28 of the 32 product engineer postings I read use the word users.
Forward deployed engineer vs product manager: which do I need?
Neither, if you run one company and have no product to improve for other customers. A product manager owns a roadmap and a forward deployed engineer builds inside a customer's systems. In a separate piece I counted every live forward deployed product manager job and Beyond Elevation compares the engineer with the product manager directly.
Where these numbers come from
Every count comes from the employers' own job feeds, the ones their applicant tracking systems publish on Greenhouse, Ashby and Lever, read on 1 October 2026. 57 employers returned live postings, 8,711 in all, including Palantir, OpenAI, Anthropic, Databricks, Scale AI, Cresta, Sierra, Decagon, Harvey, Stripe, Brex, Ramp, Notion, Figma, Datadog, Snowflake, Linear, PostHog, Intercom, Attio and Replit. A forward deployed engineering posting is any title with forward deployed and engineer in it, managers, leads and interns excluded. A product engineer posting is any title with product engineer or product engineering in it, managers excluded. That is a sample of companies hiring in AI and software, not a census, so read the counts as what these employers asked for that morning. The impressions are from my own Google Search Console for 20 August to 30 September 2026, and the autocomplete phrases were pulled from Google the same morning.
The fourteen paired postings, plus Anthropic's manufacturing role:
- Anthropic, Forward Deployed Engineer
- Anthropic, Product Engineer, Computer Use
- Anthropic, Product Engineer, Manufacturing Operations
- OpenAI, Forward Deployed Engineer, San Francisco
- OpenAI, Product Engineer, Full Stack, Agents
- Replit, Forward Deployed Engineer
- Replit, Product Engineer, New Products
- Brex, Software Engineer, Forward Deployed Agent Builder
- Brex, Senior Software Engineer, Backend, Product Engineering
- Cresta, Senior Forward Deployed Engineer, AI Agent
- Cresta, Senior Product Engineer
- Hightouch, Forward Deployed Engineer
- Hightouch, Full Stack Product Engineer
- Tennr, Senior Forward Deployed Engineer, Post-Sales
- Tennr, Senior Product Engineer
Postings come down and bands get edited, so if you're reading this weeks later, open the links and recount rather than trusting my tally.
