Forward Deployed Engineer vs Solutions Engineer: Which Should I Hire?

Hire a solutions engineer if your problem is closing the deal, and a forward deployed engineer if your problem is that the thing you closed is not live. The line between the two roles is the signature on the contract. A solutions engineer works before it, running demos, answering architecture questions and building proofs of concept, reporting into sales and measured on win rate and deal size. A forward deployed engineer works after it, with write access to the customer's production systems, measured on time to value and retention. Both are technical, both sit in front of customers, and both are worth the money. They are graded on different scoreboards, and that is the entire difference.

The scoreboard test

Every founder I speak to about this has already written the job description. They start with the skills, and the skills look identical: talks to customers, understands the architecture, can write code, comfortable in a room with a chief technology officer who is not pleased. On skills alone the two roles are twins, which is why people hire the wrong one and then conclude the hire was bad.

Ask what the person is graded on instead. HyperNest Labs sets it out plainly: the solutions engineer reports to sales or sales engineering and is measured on win rate and deal size, while the forward deployed engineer reports to engineering or customer success and is measured on time to value and retention. FDE Pulse draws the same line, putting the solutions engineer in the sales org against the technical win that closes revenue, and the forward deployed engineer in engineering against production code and deployment success.

Those are two different jobs wearing one CV. A solutions engineer who loses a deal moves to the next prospect on Monday morning. A forward deployed engineer who ships a broken integration still owns it on Monday morning. Everything else about the comparison follows from that one asymmetry.

What each one costs in the United States

Paraform ran the numbers in April 2026 across the roles that sit near the customer. The average forward deployed engineer came in at $238,000, on a range of $205,000 to $486,000. The solutions engineer came in at $155,000 to $210,000, and the customer engineer, the third role in that family, at $130,000 to $180,000. FDE Pulse gives base bands rather than averages: $150,000 to $300,000 for the forward deployed engineer, $120,000 to $250,000 for the solutions engineer, with the note that solutions engineers at the strongest companies close much of that gap through commission tied to sales performance.

Read those two numbers as a chief financial officer rather than as a recruiter, because the shape matters more than the size. A forward deployed engineer is paid in base salary, so the cost lands in full from the start date whether or not the deployment goes well. A solutions engineer is paid partly on outcome, so a real share of the package is only owed once revenue has arrived. The forward deployed engineer is the more expensive commitment even where the headline numbers look close, and that is the correct way to feel about it. You are buying delivery risk off your own balance sheet, and that is not cheap in any market.

These are American bands. New York and San Francisco sit at the top of them, and the same roles in London price lower without changing the argument at all.

Where the solutions engineer wins

Straightforwardly, and more often than the current enthusiasm for forward deployment admits.

If your deals are dying before the contract, a forward deployed engineer will not save you. The bottleneck is technical credibility in the room during the evaluation, and that is precisely what a good solutions engineer is built to supply. Paraform's guidance is sensible here: at seed stage with an enterprise sales motion, hire the solutions engineer first, and at seed stage with product-led growth, hire the customer engineer first. Forward deployed engineers become viable at Series A, when the deployments turn genuinely complex, and by Series B you are layering all three.

The solutions engineer is also the more predictable hire. It is a mature role with a settled market, understood compensation structures and a deep bench of people who have done it for a decade. The forward deployed engineer title is roughly two years into a boom, which means the label is doing a lot of different jobs at different companies and you will do more work to establish what a given candidate actually did.

Where the forward deployed engineer wins

When the sale is already made and nothing is running. This is the specific failure I am called into most often, and it does not look like an engineering problem from the inside. It looks like a customer going quiet, then a renewal conversation that opens with a question about value delivered.

The market has made the same judgement with its own money. Forward deployed engineer job listings grew roughly 800 percent between January and September 2025, and more than 1,000 percent year on year into early 2026, on Perspective AI's analysis of a thousand job posts and reporting from Pragmatic Engineer and Paraform. Palantir is the single largest hirer, then OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Databricks, with Google Cloud alone hiring 59 forward deployed engineers in 2026. In May 2026 OpenAI launched a four billion dollar deployment subsidiary. In July 2026 Anthropic launched Ode with Anthropic, built on its acquisition of Fractional AI and backed by Blackstone and Hellman & Friedman.

Note what those companies have in common. They all had extraordinary products and discovered that an extraordinary product does not deploy itself into an insurance company's claims process. No amount of pre-sales excellence fixes that, because the problem starts after the room the solutions engineer was in.

The mistake I see most

A company hires a solutions engineer to fix a delivery problem, because the solutions engineer was the person the customer already liked. Six months later the same customer is unhappy, the hire is exhausted, and the diagnosis is that the person underperformed. They did not. They were graded on a scoreboard nobody was keeping, and they lost their real one, which was pipeline, in the process.

The reverse costs less but happens too. A forward deployed engineer put in front of prospects to help win deals will be scrupulous, slow and allergic to overpromising, because production is the room they live in and they know what the demo is hiding. That instinct is precious after the signature and expensive before it.

Twenty years running finance and technology inside companies, through three exits, taught me to read this as a cash flow question rather than an org chart question. Ask where the money is currently getting stuck. If it is stuck before the contract, buy the technical win. If it is stuck after the contract, in an implementation that has been ninety percent done for a quarter, buy the person who will put their hands in the machinery.

Do I need a forward deployed engineer or a solutions engineer for my startup?

Count your unshipped deployments. If the number is zero and your pipeline is thin, the answer is a solutions engineer. If you have signed customers who are not yet live, the answer is a forward deployed engineer, and the cost of waiting is a renewal. Most companies below Series A do not need both, and the ones that hire both early usually needed one senior person who could do either and chose to buy two juniors instead.

Forward deployed engineer vs solutions architect: is that the same comparison?

A close cousin, and it fails in the same place. A solutions architect is rewarded for design and advice, producing the reference architecture and the integration plan. A forward deployed engineer is rewarded for execution and operational ownership, and is the one holding the pager when the design meets the customer's real data. You can hold an excellent architecture and no working deployment at the same time. That gap is the whole job.

Can a solutions engineer become a forward deployed engineer?

Often, and it is one of the most common routes in. The customer instincts transfer completely. Two things have to change. The standard of the code, because a demo environment forgives what production does not. And the relationship with failure, because the deal you lose is gone by Monday and the integration you broke is not. The people who make the move well are usually the ones who were already unhappy handing a proof of concept to somebody else to finish.
