Forward Deployed Engineer vs DevOps Engineer
A forward deployed engineer builds inside one customer's systems until the product works there. A DevOps engineer keeps their own company's systems shipping and running, and gets paged when they break. At 14 companies hiring both in the US this morning, 41 of 59 forward deployed postings mention travel. 1 of 35 DevOps or site reliability postings does, and that's for onboarding week.
I'm Hayat Amin. I spent twenty years as a technology chief financial officer, sold three companies in that seat, and now do forward deployed work myself inside other people's systems. On 8 October 2026 I pulled 18,864 live postings from 116 employers' own job feeds and read both jobs side by side at the companies that hire both. Below is what each one is measured on, where the two meet, and what each pays at the same company.

Why I compared them at the same companies
Google completes forward deployed engineer vs devops engineer as the first suggestion on its own phrase, and my demand scan flags it as a rising comparison none of my pieces had answered. I'd guess it's typed by two people. One is an infrastructure engineer wondering whether the forward deployed title is a step sideways. The other is an operator trying to work out which of the two they need.
Across the whole market the titles don't line up, so I only compared companies that hire both. Of the 116 employers, 46 had a forward deployed engineering posting and 46 had a DevOps or site reliability posting. 20 had both, and 14 had both in the United States: Baseten, Cresta, GitLab, Harvey, Kong, Legora, MongoDB, Okta, OpenAI, Palantir, Replit, Scale AI, Shield AI and Tennr. That gave me 59 forward deployed postings and 35 on the DevOps side, managers, leads, interns and recruiters left out.
One thing to know before the numbers. Most companies don't call the job DevOps any more. Only 7 of the 35 have DevOps in the title. The other 28 say site reliability engineer, SRE or infrastructure engineer, and the work described is the same family: pipelines, uptime, on call. I've counted them together, and I say which is which where it matters.
What the 94 postings say
I counted words in every one. Palantir carries 25 of the 59 forward deployed postings, so read the forward deployed column as leaning towards Palantir.
- Travel: 41 of 59 forward deployed against 1 of 35 DevOps. The 1 is Okta's Kubernetes SRE, which asks you to come to San Francisco or Chicago for your first week.
- Stakeholders or executives: 37 of 59 against 1 of 35. Embed, on site or customer site: 42 against 4.
- Prototype or proof of concept: 23 of 59 against 1 of 35. Feedback to product: 32 against 4. Reusable, playbook or repeatable: 25 against 7.
- On call: 9 of 59 against 19 of 35. Incidents: 7 against 23. Uptime, SLOs, SLIs or error budgets: 1 against 15.
- Kubernetes: 15 of 59 against 28 of 35. Terraform: 8 against 21. CI/CD: 11 against 22. Monitoring or observability: 18 against 29.
- Python: 46 of 59 against 23 of 35. TypeScript: 19 against 0. LLMs or agents: 32 against 9.
- Automation: 39 of 59 against 31 of 35. Production: 37 against 21.
The split is cleaner than any comparison I've run so far. The forward deployed engineer goes to the customer, builds something new in their environment, and brings what they learned back to the product team. The DevOps engineer stays home and is measured on whether the company's own systems stayed up. Both automate, and both talk about production, the one word the two sides use at almost the same rate: 37 of 59 against 21 of 35. I covered whether the forward deployed engineer writes code in do forward deployed engineers code, and the short answer is yes, mostly in Python.
Where the two jobs meet
Palantir already hires the hybrid. Of its 80 forward deployed titles this morning, 15 are infrastructure or reliability roles: Forward Deployed Infrastructure Engineer, Forward Deployed Reliability Engineer and Forward Deployed Site Reliability Engineer, counting internships and new grad posts. The New York infrastructure posting says you'll handle monitoring and alerting, configuration management, upgrades and a support on call schedule for Palantir software in government deployments. The Washington DC site reliability one keeps physical Linux servers alive in air gapped environments, needs an active Top Secret clearance, and says you'll travel to wherever the partner's hardware is.
The reliability engineer in New York is the plainest hybrid. Palantir says you gather signal by going on call, fix the problem before the customer feels it, and then push the fix back into the product. That's the DevOps instinct with the forward deployed feedback loop attached. It pays $110,000 to $147,000, the lowest band on this page.
Cloudflare has one with DevOps in the title. Its Senior Forward Deployed Engineer (DevOps), hybrid in Austin or San Francisco, is embedded with one strategic customer and brings new compute capacity online for them, from hardware delivery through burn in, monitoring, runbooks and handover to production. Bay Area pay is $194,000 to $266,000. Google also completes forward deployed engineer devops parloa, and Parloa's New York posting explains why: it describes the job as sitting at the intersection of backend engineering, DevOps and data engineering, with Kubernetes, Docker and Terraform in the stack, and asks for 4 or more years in software, systems integration, DevOps or data engineering.
So if you're a DevOps engineer looking at the forward deployed title, there's a door. It's narrower than the software door, and at Palantir it mostly opens onto government work.
Pay at the same company
Ten of the 14 companies publish a US band on both sides. Every number below was read on the employer's own posting this morning. A band is a range across levels, not an offer, and where the two postings are in different cities I've said so.
- Harvey: Forward Deployed Finance Engineer, Private Credit, New York, $254,600 to $350,000, 3 or more years. Staff SRE in San Francisco $238,000 to $290,000 with 10 or more years, Senior SRE $200,000 to $260,000.
- Kong: Forward Deployed Engineer, New Jersey, $192,010 to $274,300 with 8 or more years. Three SRE postings, in Washington state or remote in the US, run $113,000 to $170,000.
- Shield AI: Forward Deployed Engineer, Operations and Sustainment, San Diego, $152,000 to $318,000 across three levels, travel at least 50 percent. DevOps Engineer in Dallas $150,000 to $220,000 with 7 or more years.
- Palantir, New York: Forward Deployed Software Engineer $135,000 to $200,000. DevOps Engineer $135,000 to $200,000. Forward Deployed Infrastructure Engineer $135,000 to $200,000.
- Baseten, San Francisco: Forward Deployed Engineer $165,000 to $330,000. Site Reliability Engineer $165,000 to $330,000. The training flavour of the forward deployed role is $200,000 to $400,000.
- Legora, New York: Senior or Staff Forward Deployed Engineer $237,150 to $369,150, five days a week on site. Senior SRE $237,000 to $320,850, Staff SRE $272,850 to $369,150.
- Replit: Forward Deployed Engineer in Foster City $180,000 to $300,000 with 5 or more years. Staff SRE, remote in the US, $250,000 to $325,000 with 10 years.
- Cresta, remote in the US: Senior Forward Deployed Engineer $185,000 to $235,000 base plus bonus. Senior Infrastructure Engineer/SRE $205,000 to $270,000 on target earnings, so not like for like.
- Tennr, New York: Senior Forward Deployed Engineer $160,000 to $180,000 base with a $40,000 to $50,000 bonus. Site Reliability Engineer $175,000 to $200,000 plus bonus, for 2 to 4 years' experience.
- OpenAI, San Francisco: Forward Deployed Software Engineer $185,000 to $325,000. Software Engineer, DevOps, in the Hardware team building CI/CD for OpenAI's own chips, $318,000 to $485,000.
Count the ceilings and it's a draw. The forward deployed top is higher at 3 (Harvey, Kong, Shield AI), level at 3 (Palantir, Baseten, Legora) and lower at 4 (OpenAI, Replit, Cresta, Tennr). Yesterday I ran the same test against the technical account manager and the forward deployed engineer's ceiling won 6 times out of 6. Against DevOps there's no premium. At Kong the forward deployed floor is $22,010 above the best SRE ceiling, my subtraction, and at OpenAI the DevOps floor is $133,000 above the forward deployed floor, also mine. Those are the two ends. Most of the rest sit level.
That fits what the postings ask for. Companies pay a premium for whoever writes code inside a customer's environment when the alternative is someone who doesn't code. A good DevOps engineer codes all day, so the gap closes. The comparison with the technical account manager came out very differently.
Which one fits you
I'd ask one question. When something breaks at 2am, do you want it to be your system or theirs? The DevOps engineer owns the company's own platform and the pager that comes with it. 19 of the 35 postings mention on call, and Kong's SRE posting says a global 24/7 rotation. The forward deployed engineer owns a go live date at one customer, usually from a plane. OpenAI's New York and San Francisco postings say travel up to 50 percent, and Shield AI's says at least 50.
Pick DevOps if you like making one system better for years and you'd rather not present to a customer's executives. Pick forward deployed if you'd rather build something new every quarter and don't mind being the person a customer's chief technology officer calls. If you want both, Palantir's reliability and infrastructure titles and Cloudflare's DevOps one are the jobs to read. For the role on its own, start with what is a forward deployed engineer.
What this means if you run a company
If you run a company of 20 to 500 people, you probably have something like the DevOps job already, even if it's one contractor and a hosting bill. What you're unlikely to have is the forward deployed job: someone who sits with your team, learns how work moves between your finance system, your CRM and your spreadsheets, builds the connections against your live accounts, and stays until they run.
That second job is what I do through Beyond Elevation, on a fixed scope, inside your own systems with your own credentials, set out at meethayat.com/services/fde.
About Hayat Amin
I'm Hayat Amin, and I have spent twenty years in technology, most of them as a chief financial officer in companies growing faster than their systems could carry. I sold three of them in that seat, with American Express and TripAdvisor among the buyers, and carried three FT 100 fastest growing listings along the way. I read job postings the way I read a cap table, because the band and the years asked for tell you what a company thinks a job is worth.
I'm exceptional at the forward deployed half of this comparison because I come at it from the finance side. I connect the systems in a company that were never built to talk to each other, I turn what comes out of them into a live number a chief executive can run the week on instead of a month end pack, and I value and monetise the intellectual property and data a company already owns. I also sit beside founders from the first conversation to the wire transfer on an exit.
I'm available now for fractional chief financial officer work and AI operations work through Beyond Elevation.

Questions people actually ask
Forward deployed engineer vs DevOps engineer: what is the difference?
A forward deployed engineer builds inside one customer's systems until the product works there, then takes what they learned back to the product team. A DevOps engineer keeps their own company's pipelines and infrastructure running and carries the pager. At the 14 companies hiring both in the US on 8 October 2026, 41 of 59 forward deployed postings mention travel against 1 of 35 DevOps or site reliability postings, and 37 of 59 mention stakeholders or executives against 1 of 35.
FDE vs DevOps: which pays more?
Neither, at the same company. Of the 10 companies publishing a US band for both, the forward deployed ceiling is higher at 3 (Harvey, Kong, Shield AI), level at 3 (Palantir, Baseten, Legora) and lower at 4 (OpenAI, Replit, Cresta, Tennr). Palantir pays $135,000 to $200,000 in New York for both its Forward Deployed Software Engineer and its DevOps Engineer.
Forward deployed engineer vs SRE: what is the difference?
The site reliability engineer is measured on uptime. 15 of the 35 DevOps and site reliability postings I read mention SLOs, SLIs, uptime or error budgets, against 1 of 59 forward deployed postings, and 23 of 35 mention incidents against 7 of 59. Palantir hires both and a hybrid, the Forward Deployed Site Reliability Engineer, which keeps Palantir's servers running in air gapped government environments and needs an active Top Secret clearance.
Is a forward deployed engineer a DevOps role?
Usually not, but some are close. Palantir has 15 forward deployed infrastructure and reliability titles, Cloudflare lists a Senior Forward Deployed Engineer (DevOps) in Austin and San Francisco at $194,000 to $266,000 for Bay Area hires, and Parloa's New York posting puts its forward deployed engineer at the intersection of backend engineering, DevOps and data engineering. Most forward deployed postings lean on Python and customer work rather than Kubernetes and Terraform: 15 of 59 mention Kubernetes against 28 of 35 on the DevOps side.
DevOps engineer vs site reliability engineer: what is the difference?
In the postings I read, DevOps titles build the delivery pipeline and the internal platform, and site reliability titles own uptime and on call. OpenAI's DevOps posting defines CI/CD for its own chips, and Palantir's owns internal compute platforms. Legora's SRE postings own SLIs, SLOs and incident response, and Tennr's is rolling out PagerDuty across engineering. Only 7 of the 35 postings on that side use DevOps in the title.
Can a DevOps engineer become a forward deployed engineer?
Yes, and the postings say so. Parloa asks for 4 or more years in software engineering, systems integration, DevOps or data engineering. Palantir's Forward Deployed Infrastructure Engineer and Cloudflare's Senior Forward Deployed Engineer (DevOps) are written for infrastructure people. Expect more travel and more time with customers: 41 of 59 forward deployed postings mention travel.
Where these numbers come from
Every count comes from the employers' own job feeds, the ones their applicant tracking systems publish on Greenhouse, Ashby and Lever, read on 8 October 2026. 116 employers returned live postings, 18,864 in all, including Palantir, OpenAI, Anthropic, Databricks, Scale AI, Cloudflare, Okta, MongoDB, GitLab, Legora, Harvey, Replit, Baseten, Kong, Cresta, Tennr and Shield AI. A forward deployed posting is any title with forward deployed or FDE in it. A DevOps posting is any title with DevOps, site reliability or SRE in it, with forward deployed titles kept on the forward deployed side. In the 94 I compared I left out managers, leads, directors, principals, recruiters, interns, new grad programmes, analysts and Palantir's Deployment Strategists, and kept only postings that can be held in the United States. Word counts are plain text matches, so a posting that says travel once counts the same as one that says it ten times. It's a sample of companies hiring in AI and software, not a census. The autocomplete phrases were pulled from Google US the same morning. Parloa's feed was read separately the same morning. Neither Parloa nor Cloudflare had a separate DevOps or site reliability posting, so both sit outside the 14.
