Forward Deployed Engineer vs Data Engineer
A forward deployed engineer goes into a customer and builds until the system runs there. A data engineer stays home and builds the pipelines and tables the company runs its own numbers on. This morning 140 of 170 forward deployed titles mentioned customers five or more times. 5 of 60 data engineer titles did. The pay is close to level.
I'm Hayat Amin. I spent twenty years as a technology chief financial officer, sold three companies in that seat, and now do forward deployed work inside other people's systems. On 21 October 2026 I pulled 18,244 live postings from 108 employers' own job feeds and read both titles side by side. 19 employers hire both. 11 of them publish a US band on both sides, mostly in San Francisco and New York, and those 11 are below with what each seat is good for and who it's wrong for.

Why people compare the two
Google completes forward deployed engineer vs data engineer on its own stem, with forward deployed engineer vs data engineer salary as the second suggestion. Type data engineer vs and data engineer to forward deployed engineer comes back too. My demand scan has it as a rising comparison. I think the reason is simple. Both jobs move data between systems, and most of the people asking are data engineers wondering whether the forward deployed title is the better job.
It's a different job. The data engineer's customer is a colleague in finance, product or sales. The forward deployed engineer's customer pays the company, and the engineer is on their premises a good part of the year.
What 170 forward deployed titles and 60 data engineer titles say
I counted each title once per company, because Palantir alone has 71 forward deployed postings this morning. That leaves 170 forward deployed engineering titles at 44 employers and 60 data engineer titles at 39, with managers, leads, architects, analysts, scientists, specialists, recruiters and interns left out. Here's what the words say.
- Customers or clients five or more times: 140 of 170 against 5 of 60.
- Travel: 116 of 170 against 9 of 60, and 8 of those 9 are a benefit, a product or a database feature. Only Sigma Computing's data engineer posting carries a travel expectation, 25 percent, and it applies to every role there.
- SQL: 18 of 170 against 47 of 60. Airflow: 0 against 28. dbt: 0 against 24.
- Data modelling or schemas: 12 of 170 against 42 of 60. Data quality: 5 against 29.
- Pipelines: 52 of 170, under a third, against 53 of 60.
- Python: 115 of 170 against 45 of 60. Two thirds and three quarters, so it doesn't separate them.
- LLMs: 61 of 170 against 10 of 60. Prototypes or proofs of concept: 56 against 2.
- Production: 122 of 170 against 29 of 60.
So the data engineer is the one who owns the warehouse. They write the SQL, schedule the jobs, define the tables and test that the numbers are right. The forward deployed engineer is a generalist who's sent out: prototype first, then production code inside somebody else's stack, with the language model as one part of the build. I covered what that week looks like in forward deployed engineer role responsibilities and do forward deployed engineers travel.
The 11 companies hiring both, side by side
I've ordered them by the top of the forward deployed posting's published US base band, highest first. Every number was read on the employer's own posting this morning, and every gap is my subtraction. A band is a range across levels, not an offer, and I say where the two postings sit at different levels or in different cities.
1. Figma: Forward Deployed Engineer vs Data Platform Engineer
Both can be held from a US hub or remotely in the United States. Both ask for 5 or more years. Both carry the same band, $153,000 to $376,000.
Figma's forward deployed engineer is a founding hire on a new team. They embed with strategic customers, make an enterprise design system ready for AI coding tools, wire up Code Connect, set up MCP and run evals, with periodic travel. The posting says it's an engineering role, not a sales or services function. The data platform engineer builds the shared platform Figma's own analytics and data science run on: testing, CI/CD, pipeline monitoring, lineage and reverse ETL. Same money, opposite direction. Wrong for the forward deployed seat if you don't want to debug a stranger's CI.
2. Baseten: Forward Deployed Engineer vs Data Engineer
Both are in San Francisco with equity. The forward deployed engineer is $165,000 to $330,000 and asks for 2 or more years. The data engineer is $180,000 to $250,000. The data engineer floor is $15,000 higher. The forward deployed ceiling is $80,000 higher.
Baseten says plainly that its forward deployed engineer is an engineering role with product management, customer success and pre-sales mixed in, owning a customer's project from exploration to production deployment. The data engineer builds the internal data platform, semantic layers and company-wide metrics, and works with inference telemetry such as latency, throughput and token usage. Pick the data engineer seat if you want to define what the company counts as usage. Wrong for the forward deployed seat if you'd rather not do pre-sales.
3. OpenAI: Forward Deployed Software Engineer vs Data Engineer
Both are in San Francisco with equity. The forward deployed engineer is $185,000 to $325,000, asks for 7 or more years of full stack work and travel up to 50 percent. The data engineer is $235,000 to $385,000 and asks for 3 or more years as a data engineer inside 8 or more years of software engineering. The data engineer is $50,000 higher at the floor and $60,000 at the ceiling.
OpenAI's forward deployed engineer embeds with strategic customers, writes scopes of work and codes side by side with their teams on their infrastructure. The data engineer builds the pipelines that bring user event data into the warehouse and the canonical tables for growth, engagement and revenue, in Spark, Airflow and Flink, and works with the researchers behind ChatGPT. The data engineer posting says the role is based only at headquarters. Pick the data engineer seat for the higher band and a desk at home.
4. Anthropic: Staff Forward Deployed Engineer vs Data Engineer, Product
The forward deployed engineer is staff level in New York, San Francisco or Seattle at $280,000 to $320,000, with frequent travel, 25 percent, to customer sites. The data engineer is in the same three cities at $320,000 to $405,000 and asks for 7 or more years. The data engineer is $40,000 higher at the floor and $85,000 at the ceiling. Anthropic's Data Engineer, GTM and Data Engineer, Billing & Payments carry the same $320,000 to $405,000 and ask for 5 or more years.
This is the widest gap in favour of the data engineer. Anthropic's staff forward deployed engineer owns the technical strategy for a key account, leads engagements delivered with partners and represents the company to customer executives. The data engineer builds dbt pipelines that turn raw logs into canonical datasets, sets data SLAs and builds dashboards in Hex. Wrong for the forward deployed seat if you don't want to sit across from a customer's vice presidents.
5. Shield AI: Forward Deployed Engineer, Autonomy vs Data Engineer, Finance
The forward deployed engineer is open level in the United States at $152,000 to $318,000, across three published level bands. The data engineer is in San Diego at $97,000 to $140,000 and asks for 2 years. The forward deployed engineer is $55,000 higher at the floor and $178,000 at the ceiling, and part of that is level.
Shield AI's posting says the forward deployed role is travel intensive, often international, sometimes multi-week, at around 50 percent, and tells you not to apply if you've never programmed in C, C++ or Rust. The data engineer builds the governed data foundation for Finance on Databricks, the semantic layer and the integrations behind Databricks Genie, and applies FinOps to platform spend. This is the pair to read if you run finance. The data engineer is the hire that gets the planning numbers right.
6. Scale AI: Forward Deployed Software Engineer vs Senior Data Engineer, Public Sector
Both sit in Scale's public sector unit. The forward deployed band is $184,000 to $292,560 in San Francisco, New York and Seattle, and $165,600 to $263,304 in Washington DC. The data engineer is in Washington DC at $180,000 to $225,000. Comparing DC with DC, the data engineer floor is $14,400 higher and the forward deployed ceiling is $38,304 higher. Both ask for 5 or more years. The forward deployed seat asks for a TS/SCI clearance or the eligibility to get one, the data engineer an active Secret clearance.
The forward deployed engineer embeds with government customers, 25 percent travel and up to 50, and builds data integrations between their environments and Scale's platform. A data engineering background is listed as a bonus. The data engineer builds Scale's own warehouse, data marts and reporting for operations and finance, with dbt and data quality tests. If you're a data engineer looking across, this is the clearest door.
7. Coinbase: Forward Deployed Engineer, Finance vs Staff Data Engineer, Market Data
Both are remote in the United States, and both ask for 5 or more years. The forward deployed engineer is $218,025 to $256,500. The staff data engineer is $207,485 to $244,100. The forward deployed engineer is $10,540 higher at the floor and $12,400 at the ceiling.
Coinbase's forward deployed engineer doesn't go to a customer. They sit in the Office of the Chief Technology Officer, embedded as a founding engineer inside FP&A and Treasury, and learn period-end close, variance analysis and liquidity stress testing before writing code. The data engineer builds low latency market data systems for institutional trading, with on-call. Here forward deployed means sent into your own finance team.
8. Brex: Software Engineer, Forward Deployed Agent Builder vs Data Engineer
The forward deployed engineer is in New York at $152,000 to $240,000 and asks for 4 or more years. The data engineer is in San Francisco at $120,800 to $151,000 and asks for 3 or more years. Different cities, so read the gap with care: $31,200 at the floor and $89,000 at the ceiling, in favour of the forward deployed seat.
Brex's forward deployed engineer is internal too. They embed with teams across Brex, learn how the work moves, then build and ship agents on existing models, wiring tools, MCPs and internal systems together. The data engineer builds data models and pipelines on a warehouse such as Snowflake, with Airflow and dbt in production, Salesforce data coming in, and Looker or Tableau as a nice to have. Wrong for the data engineer seat if you want to build the agents rather than the tables they read.
9. Campfire: Forward Deployed Engineer vs Data Engineer
Both are in San Francisco. The forward deployed engineer is $180,000 to $220,000 and asks for 4 or more years. The data engineer is $150,000 to $220,000 with equity. Same ceiling, and the forward deployed floor is $30,000 higher.
Campfire sells an AI ERP to accounting teams and fractional CFO firms, so both seats are close to my old desk. The forward deployed engineer runs enterprise onboarding to go-live, migrates customers off NetSuite, Sage Intacct and QuickBooks, builds integrations with banks, billing, payroll and HR systems, and runs working sessions with controllers. The data engineer builds the pipelines that move a customer's financial data in and keep it in sync, and the agent that drives implementations. The posting calls it not a traditional data engineering role. This is the pair where the two jobs touch.
10. Tennr: Sr. Forward Deployed Engineer (Post-Sales) vs Data Engineer
Both are in the New York office with equity. The forward deployed engineer is $160,000 to $180,000 base plus a $40,000 to $50,000 bonus, and asks for 4 or more years. The data engineer is $160,000 to $190,000 plus a $20,000 to $40,000 bonus. The data engineer base ceiling is $10,000 higher. The forward deployed bonus is $10,000 to $20,000 higher.
Tennr handles referral and insurance paperwork for healthcare providers. Its forward deployed engineer owns enterprise implementations for health systems and national provider groups, from pre-sale discovery to go-live and expansion. The data engineer owns the data function end to end, builds pipelines into Snowflake, and leads EHR discovery and integration across about 5 to 10 healthcare systems. Pick the data engineer seat if you want to own the whole function at a small company.
11. Anduril: Forward Deployed Engineer, Air Defense vs Senior Data Engineer
Both are in Costa Mesa, California. The forward deployed engineer is $113,000 to $155,000 and asks for 3 or more years. The senior data engineer is $166,000 to $220,000 and also asks for 3 or more years. The data engineer is $53,000 higher at the floor and $65,000 at the ceiling.
Anduril says its forward deployed engineer is known inside as a Technical Operations Engineer. The job is field maintenance and support for air defence systems, travel to remote regions for up to two months at a time, up to 80 percent of the year, and the ability to climb towers to fix cameras and radars. The data engineer runs ingest and egress for a platform built on Palantir Foundry, SQLMesh, Athena and Iceberg. Wrong for the forward deployed seat if you want to write software most days.
What the 11 pairs agree on
The forward deployed ceiling is higher at 5 companies (Baseten, Shield AI, Scale AI, Coinbase and Brex), the data engineer ceiling is higher at 4 (OpenAI, Anthropic, Anduril and Tennr on base) and 2 are level (Figma and Campfire). Across every US band I read, the medians are $182,000 to $253,000 for 91 forward deployed titles and $180,000 to $258,000 for 41 data engineer titles. Pay doesn't separate these two. Where you sit does. My applied AI engineer comparison and FDE vs SDE came out the same way.
If you're a data engineer deciding, ask the hiring company two questions. Who is the customer, a colleague or someone who pays us? And how many weeks a year will I be on their premises? Coinbase and Brex show the third answer, a forward deployed engineer sent into the company's own finance or operations team.
What this means if you run a company
If you run a company of 20 to 500 people and your numbers arrive at month end, you probably need the data engineer's work done with the forward deployed engineer's habits. The work is the pipelines from billing, the CRM and the ledger into one place, one definition of revenue, and a dashboard a chief executive can read on a Tuesday. The habits are sitting with the finance team first, as Coinbase's posting asks, and staying until it runs. Shield AI hires a data engineer for exactly that foundation under Finance, at $97,000 to $140,000. You may not need a full-time one.
That's the work I do through Beyond Elevation, on a fixed scope, inside your own systems with your own credentials, set out at meethayat.com/services/fde.
About Hayat Amin
I'm Hayat Amin, and I've spent twenty years in technology, most of them as a chief financial officer in companies growing faster than their systems could carry. I sold three of them in that seat, with American Express and TripAdvisor among the buyers, and carried three FT 100 fastest growing listings along the way. When I compare two postings I read the band, the years and the travel line first, because that's where a company says what it thinks the job is.
I'm exceptional at the place where these two jobs meet, because I come at it from the finance side. I connect the systems in a company that were never built to talk to each other, I turn what comes out of them into a live number a chief executive can run the week on instead of a month end pack, and I value and monetise the intellectual property and data a company already owns. I also sit beside founders from the first conversation to the wire transfer on an exit.
I'm available now for fractional chief financial officer work and AI operations work through Beyond Elevation.

Questions people actually ask
Forward deployed engineer vs data engineer: what is the difference?
A forward deployed engineer goes to a customer and builds inside their systems until the thing runs there. A data engineer builds the pipelines, data models and tables inside their own company so its teams can trust the numbers. Across 108 employers on 21 October 2026, 140 of 170 forward deployed titles mention customers or clients five or more times against 5 of 60 data engineer titles. dbt appears in 24 of the 60 data engineer titles and in none of the 170 forward deployed ones.
Forward deployed engineer vs data engineer salary: which pays more?
Neither, on the median. 91 forward deployed titles with a published US band have a median floor of $182,000 and a median ceiling of $253,000. 41 data engineer titles have $180,000 and $258,000. At the 11 companies hiring both with US bands, the forward deployed ceiling is higher at 5, the data engineer ceiling is higher at 4, and 2 are level. A band is a range across levels, not an offer.
Can a data engineer become a forward deployed engineer?
Yes, and some postings ask for it. Scale AI's Forward Deployed Software Engineer, Public Sector lists a data engineering background covering ETL pipelines, data modelling and data governance as a bonus. Campfire's forward deployed engineer migrates customer data out of NetSuite, Sage Intacct and QuickBooks. What changes is the customer: 116 of 170 forward deployed titles mention travel, and Python appears in 115 of them against SQL in 18.
What is a forward deployed data engineer?
Google completes the phrase, but none of the 18,244 postings I read on 21 October 2026 carried it as a title. The nearest jobs are forward deployed engineers whose work is mostly data: Campfire's, which moves a customer's ledger from a legacy ERP, and Scale AI's public sector role, which builds data integrations between customer environments and Scale's platform.
Do data engineers travel like forward deployed engineers?
Not in these postings. 9 of the 60 data engineer titles contain the word travel, and 8 of those are a benefit, a product name or a database feature. The ninth is Sigma Computing, whose posting says every role carries a 25 percent travel expectation unless stated otherwise. On the forward deployed side, OpenAI asks for up to 50 percent, Anthropic's staff posting 25 percent and Anduril's air defence role up to 80 percent of the year.
Where these numbers come from
Every count comes from the employers' own job feeds, the ones their applicant tracking systems publish on Greenhouse, Ashby and Lever, read on 21 October 2026. 108 employers returned live postings, 18,244 after removing exact duplicates. A forward deployed engineering title is any engineer or developer title with forward deployed or FDE in it, with managers, directors, leads, architects, analysts, scientists, strategists, specialists, recruiters and interns left out: 270 postings, 170 titles counted once per company. A data engineer title is any title with data engineer, data platform engineer or data infrastructure engineer in it, with the same roles left out: 66 postings, 60 titles. The five mentions rule for customer facing is mine and it's blunt. Word counts are plain text matches, so a posting that says SQL once counts the same as one that says it ten times. The medians use every title with a published US dollar band, 91 and 41. That's a sample of companies hiring in AI and software, not a census. The autocomplete phrases were pulled from Google the same morning.
