Datadog forward deployed engineer
A Datadog forward deployed engineer embeds with a customer and gets Datadog deployed, instrumented and used, then hands the account back to sales. This morning Datadog had 433 live postings and one with the title: Forward Deployed Engineering Lead, Datadog for Startups, in New York or San Francisco, at $200,000 to $250,000.
I'm Hayat Amin. I spent twenty years as a technology chief financial officer, sold three companies in that seat, and now do forward deployed work myself inside smaller companies, so I read a posting like this one twice, once as the engineer and once as the person who has to pay for the team. On 19 October 2026 I went through every role on Datadog's own Greenhouse board. Here is what the job is, what it pays next to the roles around it, and who should apply.

One posting, and it's a manager
Of 433 live postings, one has forward deployed in the title, and none of the other 432 mention it in the text. That one was updated on 16 October. It's tagged as a manager role, sits in the Engineering, Corporate Development cost centre, and opens by saying the FDE function is in an active growth phase. The lead works with the Head of Datadog for Startups and an existing FDE team.
So there was no individual contributor FDE job open at Datadog today. If you searched for one and found this, that's why. The team exists, and the next hires will come through this lead, who is asked to hire, onboard and develop full time FDEs.
What the lead is asked to build
The posting calls the role part field technical leader, part programme architect and part cross functional connector. Strip the wording away and there are six jobs in it:
- Run the operating model end to end: intake, scoping, sprint delivery and handoff back to account teams.
- Report on four measures: time to value, adoption lift, ARR influence and NPS.
- Build a catalogue of offerings: observability quickstarts, custom integrations, LLM and AI observability accelerators, CI/CD pipeline instrumentation and cost optimisation reviews.
- Help price them, including free to paid conversion plays and paid deployment packages.
- Turn product gaps found in the field into prioritised briefs for Product and Engineering.
- Hire FDEs, and manage a rotating cohort of software engineers and technical solutions engineers seconded in from other teams.
There's a seventh line I like. The lead is asked to spot small product opportunities (integrations, dashboards, automation scripts, open source tooling) and run short engineering sprints that turn a need customers keep raising into something every customer can use. That is the part of forward deployed work that separates it from consulting. I wrote about that line in is a forward deployed engineer just a consultant.
Why it sits inside Datadog for Startups
Datadog for Startups gives a company up to $100k in credits and a year of the full platform. To get in you have to be Series A or earlier, new to Datadog, and referred by one of its partners. You can't apply directly.
Read that next to the posting and the commercial logic is plain. A startup on credits pays nothing for a year. The FDE gets it instrumented properly in that year, so that when the credits end it converts to a paying account and grows. The posting says it outright with free to paid conversion plays, and it lists ARR influence as a success measure. It also says the programme should reach well beyond any single customer segment, which tells you startups are the first market, not the only one.
What it pays next to the roles around it
Datadog prints a band on its US postings, so the comparison is easy to make from the same board on the same morning:
- Forward Deployed Engineering Lead, New York or San Francisco: $200,000 to $250,000.
- Senior Sales Engineer, Majors (East), New York: $171,000 to $228,000.
- Senior Sales Engineer, most other US regions including AI Accounts: $149,000 to $198,000.
- Director, Enterprise Sales Engineering, US Central: $180,000 to $240,000.
- Senior Manager, Product Solutions Architecture: $211,000 to $281,000.
- Technical Account Manager, East, Boston or New York: $124,000 to $165,000.
The FDE lead's floor sits above the top of every senior sales engineer band except New York Majors, and close to a director of sales engineering. That's a manager of a team still being built, paid like a senior leader. A band is a range across levels, not an offer, and the posting adds equity and possible variable pay on top. I compared the two roles across the market in forward deployed engineer vs sales engineer and forward deployed engineer vs technical account manager.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It asks for 8 or more years in forward deployed engineering, solutions architecture or software engineering, at least 3 of them facing customers, and 2 or more years managing or leading engineers. It wants Kubernetes, the three big clouds, CI/CD and infrastructure as code, plus hands on time with an observability, APM or logging product. Datadog experience is a plus, not a requirement. The role needs eligibility for US export control authorisations, and the posting flags access to ITAR controlled data.
It suits a solutions architect or senior sales engineer who has already run a small team and wants to build a function rather than join one. It suits someone who likes pricing and packaging as much as code, because the catalogue and the paid deployment packages are part of the job. If you want to write production code every day, it's the wrong seat. The lead builds the team that ships, represents it in quarterly business reviews, and works across Sales, Customer Success and Business Development without direct authority over any of them. Travel is described as significant, with no percentage.
The posting I read as a CFO
Four success measures, and one of them is ARR influence. Paid deployment packages. A rotating cohort of seconded engineers so headcount stays flexible. That is a services line designed to pay for itself through conversion, and it's a sensible one. From the finance seat, the question I'd ask of any services team is whether the deployment work shows up in revenue twelve months later. Datadog has written that question into the job.
The same page tells a founder something useful. A Datadog FDE is there to deploy Datadog. If your startup gets one through the credits programme, you'll get excellent monitoring of your systems. You won't get someone to connect your CRM to your finance system or build the dashboard your board pack depends on. That's a different job. The vendor FDE pattern is the same at Anthropic, which I covered in Anthropic forward deployed engineer.
What this means if you run a company
If you run a company of 20 to 500 people in New York or Chicago and you want the forward deployed model inside your own operations, a vendor's FDE won't be the answer. Their job is adoption of their product. Yours is a week that runs on numbers you can see.
That is what I do through Beyond Elevation, my firm. I sit inside your business, connect the finance system, the CRM and the spreadsheets that feed the number you care about, build the agents and the live dashboard on top, and stay until your team runs on it. The scope is at meethayat.com/services/fde.
About Hayat Amin
I'm Hayat Amin, and I've spent twenty years in technology, most of them as a chief financial officer in companies growing faster than their systems. I sold three of them in that seat, with American Express and TripAdvisor among the buyers, and carried three FT 100 fastest growing listings along the way.
I'm exceptional at the work this posting describes, getting a system deployed and used inside someone else's company, because the finance seat taught me where a company's week breaks before anyone writes code. I connect the systems that were never built to talk to each other, put a live dashboard in front of the chief executive instead of a month end pack, and value and monetise the intellectual property and data a company already owns. I also sit beside founders from the first conversation to the wire transfer on an exit.
I'm available now for fractional chief financial officer work and AI operations work through Beyond Elevation.

Questions people actually ask
Does Datadog have forward deployed engineers?
Yes. The Forward Deployed Engineering Lead posting, updated on 16 October 2026, says the function is in an active growth phase and that the lead works with an existing FDE team and the Head of Datadog for Startups. On 19 October 2026 it was the only one of Datadog's 433 live postings with forward deployed in the title, so there was no open individual FDE role that morning.
What is the Datadog forward deployed engineer salary?
The only live posting, the Forward Deployed Engineering Lead in New York or San Francisco, states $200,000 to $250,000 a year, plus equity and possible variable pay. It is a manager role. No individual FDE band was published on 19 October 2026 because no individual FDE role was open.
What is the Datadog sales engineer salary?
On the same board, Senior Sales Engineer roles across most US regions print $149,000 to $198,000, the New York Majors (East) role prints $171,000 to $228,000, and Commercial Sales Engineer roles in Denver and Boston print $80,000 to $106,000. The FDE lead's floor of $200,000 sits above the top of every US senior sales engineer band except New York Majors.
What is the Datadog for Startups program?
Datadog's own page says it gives early stage companies up to a year of the full platform with up to $100k in credits. You must be Series A or earlier, new to Datadog, and referred by one of its partners, and you can't apply directly without a referral.
What does the Datadog for Startups lead do?
The Forward Deployed Engineering Lead runs the FDE motion for the startup programme and beyond it: intake, scoping, sprint delivery and handoff back to account teams, a catalogue of offerings from observability quickstarts to LLM observability accelerators, pricing for paid deployment packages, and hiring FDEs plus a rotating cohort of engineers seconded from other teams.
Does a Datadog forward deployed engineer travel?
The lead posting says you should be comfortable with significant travel to embed with customers, and the role is hybrid. It gives no percentage.
The travel count is in do forward deployed engineers travel.
Where these numbers come from
Every count comes from Datadog's public Greenhouse job board, read on 19 October 2026, which returned 433 live postings. A title counts as forward deployed if it contains Forward Deployed or FDE, and the text check is a plain match on forward deployed across the full posting. Pay bands are as printed on each posting. The programme facts are from the Datadog for Startups page, read the same morning. Google autocomplete was read from the US the same morning and completes datadog forward deployed engineer as its own first suggestion.
